In the world of electronic music -- itself more a platform than traditional "genre" -- there are producers who specialize in electro, house, dubstep, what have you. But Skrillex? Skrillex does it all.
With a decidedly rock and roll background steeped in the do-it-yourself hardcore punk scene, Sonny Moore -- the former frontman of From First To Last and a well-known, gifted solo artist -- has already rocked a number of impressive remixes, soundscapes and other powerful, nuanced compositions as his Skrillex alter-ego.
The double-platinum Twilight theme song by Perry Farrell has received the Skrillex treatment, along with tracks by All-American Rejects, Atreyu, HORSE the band, Bring Me The Horizon, Shark Attack and more.
"'Skrillex' is actually an old AIM screen-name I had which became a nickname," explains Sonny. "The music that I'm doing as Skrillex is totally different than what I'm doing as 'Sonny,' which is more of a band setting. There are some vocals, for example, with Skrillex but I'm using it more as an instrument than singing lyrics."
From the clubs, to the recording studio, from the internet mixing software he downloaded as a teen, no medium is a match for Skrillex's talent, as evidenced by the hard-driving dance music exploding from Skrillex's debut EP.
People who are familiar with SebastiAn, Aphex Twin or Daft Punk will immediately understand what Skrillex is all about. Fans of Sonny's rock work are already flocking to his numerous appearances at LA clubs and parties. "My fans are 'getting' it," points out Sonny, excitedly. "The coolest part about it is that they're creating electronic music now."
Skrillex is difficult to categorize and even harder to ignore. Painting on a limitless canvas with an ever-expanding palette, Skrillex is sure to defy all expectations as the body of work continues to grow by leaps and bounds.
